... knackered ! Not too sure what to make of the week - brilliant - gut retching - big highs - huge lows . But firstly Friday - Gold Cup day .
It's not my favorite - just too many people - and often I head home in the morning and watch it in comfort . But with a couple of great racing friends having big chances I stayed on in 'great expectation' - and especially as our stable was in such fine form - with three winners already on the board . However - thing didn't pan out quite as we hoped . Kings Palace was second favourite for the Albert Bartlett - but for some reason didn't 'run his race'. He fell at the last when well beaten . The horse - whom I've become very fond of over the last season - laid there prostrate . The dreaded screens were erected and one could only imagine the worst . It was with huge relief when - after a couple of minutes the fella got to his feet - just winded . Phew !
And then - a bit later - The Very Lovely Lady Caroline had Vieux Lion Rouge running in the Martin Pipe - a race the Pipes would just love to win - for obvious reasons . But not this year ! Well down the field .
So on to The Gold Cup . To see these great 'war horses' in the pre-parade - no tack - naked as it were - is always a sight to behold . I'll always remember seeing Denman upsides Kauto Star - Botham v Gower - tank v athlete . Tank won that day ! The pick of the paddock on Friday was On His Own - trained by Willie ( I once had too much to drink and called him Wally ) Mullins . His horses have looked fantastic all week - and they ran that way . On His Own was an unlucky 2nd and was my only 'pick-up' on the day. Henderson's horse's have not looked as well as they did last year - sort've dull in their coats - and Bobs Worth ran like that.
So what of the week ? Absolute carnage ! Unfortunately - the ground had dried up and the jocks went just too quick . Not too sure how many horses were lost and how many jockeys ended up in a hospital bed - but it was too many . I think the quick ground also contributed to some outsiders winning - and some favourites disappointing .
Best story of the week ~ Brian Drew's son Harry had the first five up in the jackpot on Wednesday - his sixth and last selection was second ! Oh well - he picked up a couple hundred for the place pot as a consolation - rather than a couple hundred thousand . He took it all really very well and was still smiling Thursday morning . Not sure I would've been! CU
Ps - picture of George now retired and looking relaxed and well - but not sure he's going to make it in dressage though !

In the words of Bruce Springsteen ...
... glory days - glory days ! It's not often like this . Yesterday we were all licking our wounds - and we tend get use to that - and what with last year with no winner . So all this makes a very welcome change .
We all recon Tom Scu is in the form of his life - getting Warhorse up to beat Ruby on Tues - then today when we all thought Dynaste was too far back - and what a jump at the last ! Great stuff .
And then to cap it all - a quiet ride on Ballynagour to be produced at the last . Ballynagour was favorite for the same race last year and came down the field - so patience does pay ! DP tipped him this morning ... but he's a better trainer than a tipster !
Getting back to reality - Geoffrey ate up and was fine this morning - not surprising since he didn't have a race . I thought the write-up in the RP had it right - 'hampered twice by fallers - not recover' . As I said yesterday - just feel he's still a bit novicey - spending too long in the air . We'll look to go to Aintree - a flat course he loves - but I don't think we will see the best of him till next season .
Another big day tomorrow with Kings Palace and Vieux Du Lion representing a couple of terrific owners . And what price would we have got at the beginning of the week - DP being top trainer ? Bring it on ! CU

Firstly ...
... thank you to everyone for all their good wishes - much appreciated .
I thought Geoffrey was going ok - until one fell in front of him - got stopped - then made a mistake at the next . Whether he would've got into the mix would be open to debate - but he's back in one piece and finished the race . I don't think - at this stage in his chasing career - he jumps quick enough for this grade - quite safe but novicey - needs a lot more experience. We might have to go the handicap route with him .
Otherwise - a tough day . The lovely Lady Caroline had two big chances - ran big races - was theres about - but to no avail . As did Red Sherlock in the first - did well - but found wanting .
Saying that - we had a great day . We were invited by the France Gallop to their box - and well - although not quite Auteuil - was pretty good . They unfortunately ran out of champagne - at around about 4-39 - but very good wine flowed . Perhaps - if Geoffrey had won there might have been some Gevrey Chambertin ! Another year - CU ....tomorrow

If you're in it ...
... you've got a chance . Yea - might have to remind myself that tomorrow ! It's a strange old game - Brookhouse ( he calls me Stanley ) is on fire . A double on Saturday and a big race winner at Cheltenham today with Western Warhorse - at a rather tasty 40-1 ( on the tote ) - in The Arkle . So it was an early glass of bubbly and - well - the pressure is off for DP ... and me ! £10 ew and what with Saturday - I'm starting to feel - well - pretty good about this racing lark .
On top of that I had Vautour - 2nd in the 1st - The Package - 3rd in the 3rd . And then it all came to a grinding halt ! But job done .
Haven't had much time to think about tomorrow . I know we're an outsider but Warhorse proves a point - got to be in it..... Barry 'The Blood' ( ah - who is he you say ) tipped Geoffrey as his nap of the week . Let's hope he's right ! CU

Have a great day / week Roger+Nic and all your blog followers !
Suppose Mr Nicholls will win the opener with Irving, shame didn't get on when Steve tipped it @ 8/1 .
Would be nice to see David Pipe get the monkey off his back early & also hear tales of you quaffing Champagne with monsieur Clayeux and his Dom Alco of the day.
Cheers !! Douglas.

Where off ...
... to a flyer ! I always think of the Sandown meeting the Saturday before Cheltenham as - well - the first day of The Festival . I think it's something to do with the Pond House team having such a great record in the Imperial Cup - a big betting handicap - in which - over the years the Pipes have farmed . And it was business as usual on Saturday with Baltimore Rock - pictured - winning in good style for Roger Brookhouse - at a decent 7-1 .
Roger had just won the previous race with Charteaux - trained by Tom George - so it was double celebrations for Rog . He's got some fantastically good horses with great chances this week - so what a start ! RB is one of the great characters in racing and I wish him all the success for this week .
And Geoffrey is still on course for Wednesday . DP & Tom Scu reported that they were delighted with his latest piece of work - so its all systems go ! I can relax tomorrow and enjoy the racing ...but thoughts will be on Wednesday . CU
